Boxes
Box making goes hand in hand with bookbinding – it often necessary to make a custom box to protect a new binding or prevent further damage to a deteriorating book. Many of the same skills are used – meticulous measuring, covering and decoration. Most of these boxes are clam shell boxes, also called drop-spine boxes. They were initially developed at the Library of Congress to protect rare books and documents. They trays and covers are bookbinder’s board covered with combinations of materials – leather, cloth or decorated paper.
